Visual Arts

Visual Arts will give you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with a range of 2D and 3D art making media and skills. You’ll also develop your ability to formulate ideas using specific design processes that emulate the practice of artists.

You’ll be introduced to a variety of artists and examine the factors that affect the meaning and significance of their work through the visual arts key content:

-        practice

-        conceptual framework

-        frames.

Why study visual arts? 

By studying visual arts subjects, students will:
 

-        appreciate art and gain an understanding that it is subject to different interpretations.

-        use a variety of tools, media, technology and design processes.

-        critically investigate the historical, social and cultural significance of art.

-        develop their own creativity and further expand on your artistic skills.

-        recognize the cross- curriculum connections between art and your other KLA.

What opportunities will you get?  

Visual Arts is a practical subject which allows students to develop major works using the design process and recorded through a portfolio and project-based learning. 

These activities are further enhanced through co-curricular opportunities and excursions including excursions to: 

-        Art Gallery of NSW to see the public collection

-        Archibald portrait prize

-        Art Express

-        prominent temporary exhibitions

-        Museum of Contemporary Art to see public collection

-        Hazelhurst Regional Gallery to see Art Express

-        Oatley Park photography.

What will you study? 

Students can study the following visual arts subjects: 

Visual arts (mandatory)

Year 7  

Elements of Design:

●      Theory

●      Practical tasks.

Animals in Art:

●      Critical and historical studies

●      Animal artworks (main task a canvas painting).

Year 8

Art skills:

●      Single and two point perspective

●      The human figure

●      Portraits .

 Surrealism, Dreams and Fantasy:

●      Critical study of Surrealism

●      Investigation of dreams and fantasy worlds.

Visual Arts (elective) – years 9 and 10

Photography and Digital Media (elective) – years 9 and 10.

 

Years 11 and 12 

The following subjects may be available for you to study in years 11 and 12. There are no prerequisites for studying these but choosing electives from Visual Arts and Tas in years 9 and 10 can help you decide if you want to further your studies.  

-        Ceramics

-        Photography, Video and Digital Imaging

-        Visual Arts

-        Visual Designs

-        Software Design and Development
