Technological and applied studies (TAS)

Technological and applied studies allow students to explore a variety of subjects that involve design thinking and project-based learning. Students use a range of tools, materials and techniques in the design process and technological experiences through theory and practical lessons.

Why study technological and applied studies? 

TAS engages students in design and production activities as they develop solutions to identified needs and opportunities.

By studying TAS subjects, students will develop:

●      computational thinking: development of coding systems using algorithms to automate tasks;

●      design thinking: developing a solution/product to address a real world scenario or need;

●      systems thinking skills: understand the interactions between phenomena, people, places and events, and the interdependence of components of technical, economic and social issues.

What opportunities will you get?  

TAS is a practical subject which allows students to develop major works using the design process and recorded through a portfolio and project-based learning. 

These activities are further enhanced through co-curricular opportunities and excursions including: 

·       community garden sustainability program

·       excursion to the Sydney harbour bridge

·       excursions to local areas for construction techniques

·       excursion to Centre Point Tower

·       excursion to the Royal Easter Show

·       cake decorating incursions

·       Greenscreen, 3D camera, laser cutting, 3D printing and robotics.

What will you study? 

Students can study the following subjects through the TAS faculty: 

Years 7 and 8 (mandatory):

●     digital technologies

●     materials technology (timber)

●     materials technology (engineered systems)

●     agricultural and food technology.

Years 9 and 10 (elective):

●     food technology

●     industrial technology (timber)

●     industrial technology (engineering)

●     industrial technology (metal)

●     information and software technology.

Years 11 and 12 

The following subjects may be available for you to study in years 11 and 12. There are no prerequisites for studying these but choosing electives from TAS in years 9 and 10 can help you decide if you want to further your studies.  

·       food technology

·       hospitality (kitchen operations or food and beverage)

·       engineering

·       information processes and technology

·       software design and development.
