Novel Coronavirus

Dear Parent

The NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Department of Education have recommended that any student who was travelling in China (including Hong Kong) over the past 14 days should not return to school or child care services this week, as the coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks.

Students who returned to Australia more than 14 days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school this week.

There has been a small number of cases of confirmed Novel Coronavirus in New South Wales.

In accordance with national public health guidelines, exclusions only apply for those who are a:

· Confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus – exclude until medically cleared

· Close contact of a confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus – exclude for 14 days since last contact with the confirmed case

Close contact is defined as living in the same household, 15 minutes face-to-face contact with a person with confirmed coronavirus in any setting, or sharing a closed space with a person with confirmed coronavirus for more than 2 hours.

The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the Ministry of Health.

Consistent with current guidelines, staff and students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any child becomes unwell we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the Ministry of Health as appropriate.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take advice received from NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Department of Education to ensure we are responding to the situation appropriately.

Kathy Klados | Principal

90th Anniversary

Georges River College Hurstville Boys Campus (formerly Hurstville Boys High School) will celebrate its 90th Anniversary in 2019. An open invitation to visit the school has been offered to former teachers, students and the wider community. On the 18th of May, 2019, the school will open its gates to those who wish to explore the school grounds and buildings, to meet the teachers and students and to allow the chance to relive fond memories. Throughout the night, a presentation and dinner will be held in the school hall.

In 1929, in the south of Sydney, Hurstville Central Technical School (later Georges River College Hurstville Boys Campus) was established, with 530 students and 21 staff members. With a large industrial technology workshop that had been used for developing trade skills, the school offered a hands-on approach to secondary education. The school functioned with the help of devoted staff, including Mr Percy Franks, who worked with the school for over 50 years.

Over the following decades, the school grew around the central A-Block building, as did the school population. The character, humour and wit of the boys endured steadfast through multiple wars and depressions, evidenced partly by the words, drawings and photographs published in the school magazines, which were preserved with great care to this day. During the early years, the Depression meant that the students had to “manufacture the badges [for the Prefects] from sheet brass, have them engraved and chrome plated” (former student, Ray Emmerson, 1987). Emmerson also recalls the teachers helping pay the £2 he needed to attend the school football trip.

Later additions were made to the school with B, C, D and F-Block, as well as the library, gymnasium, workshops, computer rooms, music rooms and break-out spaces. The large connecting field separating Hurstville Boys from Hurstville Public served to give the boys a great training and sporting ground. Due to the efforts of a tenacious principal A. J. Clark, the school also acquired a priceless Italian statue (‘The Boxer’), after submissions to the NSW Government in the 1970s. In the early 1980s a large fire caused significant damage to the upper floor of A-Block, which was later repaired.

As the school transitioned into the 21st century, so too did it transition from a 7-12 school to part of the Georges River College Campus. It would become one of the three middle schools offering years 7-10, before the boys would join Penshurst Girls and Peakhurst High to finish year 11 and 12 at Oatley Senior Campus. Developments in accessibility, technology and facilities became a major priority and large-scale renovations led to the addition of J-Block, walkways and elevators, basketball courts, and projectors installed in many classrooms across the school.

Over the past 90 years, Hurstville Boys has educated tens of thousands of young men, producing great academics, sporting legends and distinguished citizens. Hurstville Boys have proudly contributed to a spectrum of fields; including medicine, politics, education, engineering, business, the arts and the trades. A fraternal bond was forged for countless men, who remember their time fondly, and proudly refer to themselves as Hurstville Boys.

You're invited to participate in the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey, designed for parents and carers. This survey complements the TTFM student and teacher surveys, which focus on student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices. All Department of Education schools have the opportunity to participate if they choose.

Why should I participate?

Parents and carers are an important and valued part of the school community. Schools will be able to use the survey feedback to make practical improvements and inform their school plan.

What does it involve?

This is an online survey that takes about 15 minutes to complete. It is anonymous,
and voluntary. If you have more than one child at this school, and feel that your children's experiences differ, you can complete the survey more than once.

How can I participate?

You can access the survey in your own time, until 20 October 2017.
Follow the link below on your computer, tablet or smartphone:

https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/8nr64

The survey is available in English, Arabic and Chinese (Traditional). After clicking on the link above, parents will have the option to choose their language.

More information on the Partners in Learning survey can be found on the NSW Department of Education's TTFM website:
http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

Tell Them From Me Student Survey

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 21 August and 13 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by the due date.

Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

Full STEAM ahead with coding

Today, most people have a computer in their pocket that is more than 100,000 times faster and has 10,000,000 times more memory than a full sized computer 30 years ago. It is connected to every other computer on the planet and can access virtually every piece of human knowledge ever created, nearly instantaneously.

The pace of change in computing is extraordinary.

Coding is the art of telling a computer how to perform complex tasks. Once you know how to code, you can create virtual worlds within the computer where the only limit on what is possible is your imagination.

The new digital technologies curriculum will be introduced next year, but Hurstville Boys can't wait. Already there are a number of initiatives underway with excursions to the Powerhouse Museum Madmaker Challenge and Cuberider.
Norovirus outbreak in community

What is norovirus gastroenteritis?

Norovirus gastroenteritis is diarrhoea and vomiting caused by a virus in the digestive system. There are many viruses that can cause gastroenteritis but norovirus is one of the most common. It often occurs as outbreaks where many people get sick at the same time. Common names used for gastroenteritis due to norovirus are ‘gastric flu' or ‘stomach flu', ‘winter vomiting' and ‘viral gastro'.

What are the symptoms?

Common symptoms of viral gastroenteritis include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. Other symptoms may include headache, chills, low grade fever, muscle aches and tiredness. The illness often begins suddenly and symptoms last between 24–48 hours.

How are noroviruses spread?

Noroviruses are usually spread from one infected person to another. Noroviruses are often associated with outbreaks where people are in close living spaces, such as Aged-care facilities, hospitals, cruise ships and community sporting events. There are different ways in which people become infected:

• eating food or drink that is contaminated with norovirus. This can occur in two ways:

– when the food may become contaminated during growing or processing, especially oysters

– when a person who is ill prepares food for other people.

• touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus and then putting their hands in their mouth

• having direct contact with another person who is infected (for example, caring for someone who is ill)

• small particles of vomit settle on people or food in the same room and result in infection.

When do symptoms begin?

Symptoms of vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea usually begin 24–48 hours after ingestion of the virus, but they can appear as early as 12 hours after someone is exposed to the virus.

Are noroviruses contagious?

Yes, noroviruses are highly contagious. People infected with norovirus can spread the virus from the day they start to feel ill to at least 2 days after diarrhoea or vomiting stops.

Who gets norovirus?

Anyone can become infected with norovirus. There are many different strains of norovirus which makes it difficult for a person's body to develop long-lasting immunity. Therefore, you can get norovirus more than once during your lifetime.

Is there any treatment available?

No specific medication or antibiotics exists for norovirus infection and there is no vaccine available.

When people are ill with diarrhoea or vomiting they should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. People with severe symptoms or dehydration should seek medical advice.

How can norovirus infections be prevented?

There are some simple measures to prevent infection:

• Wash hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and changing nappies.

• Wash hands with soap and water before eating, or preparing food for oneself or others.

• Do not prepare food for others while you have gastroenteritis, or for at least 2 days after diarrhoea or vomiting stops.

• Immediately remove and wash clothing or bedding that may be contaminated with diarrhoea or vomit.

• After an episode of vomiting or diarrhoea, clean the area with detergent and warm water and then disinfect contaminated surfaces with household bleach diluted to 1000 parts per million (ppm). (Note: Bleach may damage soft furnishings.)

• People who are ill with norovirus or suspected viral gastroenteritis should be excluded from child care, school or work for a minimum of 48 hours after diarrhoea or vomiting stops.

Finally, it is very important that people thoroughly wash their hands even after symptoms have stopped. Handwashing has been shown to reduce a person's risk of both spreading and catching gastroenteritis.

Where can you find out more?

Whooping Cough

Whooping cough information for schools

There is an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) in NSW, mainly affecting school-aged children.

Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough can spread to anyone at home, including younger brothers and sisters. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies.

Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and may be worse at night.

<span class="Normal__Char" style="font-family:;" 12pt="">· Children with these symptoms should see a doctor.

Check that all your children are up to date with their vaccines, due at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 4 years and 12 years of age (offered to all Year 7 students through the NSW school-based vaccination program). A booster is also recommended at 18 months of age.

A booster dose of vaccine is also recommended for adults that are in contact with young children, such as school staff and parents. Pregnant women are recommended to have a booster dose during each pregnancy and this is funded by NSW Health. Those who are new parents or carers of babies should consult their general practitioner about appropriate immunisation.

The Partners in Learning parent feedback survey

Our school will also be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents' and carers' perspectives on their child's experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically takes 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 17 August and 16 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents
